Distal Femur (Thighbone) Fractures of the Knee

distal-femur

The femur—the bone in the thigh, is a major presence in both size and strength. Fractures of the thighbone that occur just above the knee joint are called distal femur (thighbone) fractures Mexico. The femur is indicated where the bone flares out as seen in an upside-down funnel.

Distal femur fractures most often occur during a motor vehicle accident, in children who endure high energy injuries, such as falling on playground equipment and in older patients where the bone is weak and breaks extend into the knee joint shattering the bone into many pieces. A distal femur fracture can involve damage to the surrounding soft tissue.

Distal Femur Fractures can range from a simple hairline fracture to a complex injury. Fractures that shatter are known as intra-articular and are challenging to treat.

Distal femur fractures can be closed or open. An open fracture defines a break in which bone fragments stick out through the skin or the open site pierces down to the broken bone. Open fractures typically harm the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

When you break the distal femur, both the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles are inclined to contract and shorten resulting in the bone fragments changing position.

Cause of Distal Femur Fractures

Distal femur fractures most commonly occur in younger patients caused by injury, such as a forceful fall, further causing other injuries, often of the head, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, and other limbs.

In elderly patients, distal femur fractures are caused by poor bone quality. As we age, our bones become very weak and fragile. An ordinary fall can cause a distal femur fracture, ultimately occurring in combination of other concerning medical problems, such as conditions of the heart, lungs, and kidneys, and diabetes.

Symptoms of Distal Femur Fractures

The most common symptoms of distal femur fractures include pain with weight bearing, swelling and bruising, tenderness to touch and a deformity, in which the knee looks out of character.

In most cases, these symptoms occur around the knee, but you may also have symptoms in the thigh area.

Treatment for Distal Femur Fractures

Engaged by the newer techniques and special treatment materials, the results of surgical treatment are worthy, even in older patients who have poor bone quality.
